ROPING CATTLE
Roping Cattle will make or break you in the team roping business. Figuring out the best
solution for your business is tricky. If you have the room and resources, (hay, feed) then
owning your cattle is the best. You are in more control over quality too. You can rope these
cattle before your roping to sort off any bad ones. That in itself is a big advantage. We
invariably pull 5 to 8 head out of every batch that are delivered to us on the day of the
roping. You don't get the opportunity to rope them first. You usually figure out you have some
bad cattle in the first round, and thats were your reruns come in. If you are going to lease
cattle by the event, as I do, its best to get a good relationship with your stock contractor and
had the extra room and resources to maintain cattle.
It has worked out extremely well for both of us, we get
goodcattle and they help pay for their own roping. This
may be something to consider if you have the same
situation.
Roping Cattle Lease Monthly, Event or
Own?

Lease by the Month
Usually $25.00 to $30.00 head per month with a 5
to 10 head minimum. 6 month lease. Cattle death
is usually $500.00 per cow
Advantage
1. You keep the stock fee
2. You can test cattle and cull as needed prior to
roping
Disadvantage
1. You house, feed and maintain (worming, etc)
2. You pay for cattle if they die (and they do!)

Roping Cattle by the Event
Varies from $6.00 to $10.00 a team
IE: 100 team total = $600.00 to $1000.00

1. No cattle on grounds to maintain
2. If Arena is off site, no hauling fees
Disadvantage
1. No money to be made off the stock charge
2. Can't really evaluate cattle good before roping
3. Some contractors have minimum
ie:100 team minimum- if no one shows, you owe for
100 teams!

advantages are by far greater. Choosing
advantages are by far greater. Choosing
well bred corriente cattle is the best choice.
If you get good cattle at least 7/8 corriente
bred, they should last for quiet a while. You
must also follow the guide lines as most
good contractors do. 1/3 cattle to the
number of total teams. If you do not, your
cattle will depreciate fast and you will be
replacing them often. Good care and rest is
another concern. If you own your roping
cattle you can care for them better than
they may get else where.

Advantages
1. Profits from stock
2. Control over quality
3. Availability
4. Personal use

Disadvantages
1. 24 hour care + cost of feed
2. Upfront cost/big money tied up
